Middle school action returned to the Allen County area on Thursday night. Here is the rundown:

Iola Football

Two games resulted in two thumpings of Osawatomie. The seventh-grade boys ran past Osawatomie 38-0, and were led by Cole Mathes’ 67 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns rushing. Dreden Ellis also chipped in 44 yards on the ground along with 1 TD rushing. Defensively, the seventh-grade Ponies were highlighted by Mathes’ 11 tackles, 2 sacks, and a fumble recovery. Cortland Carson also shined on the Ponies defensive unit with 8 tackles to go along with a solo sack.

The eighth grade boys also earned a shutout. The Ponies trampled Osawatomie 64-0 to start 2019 on the perfect note. Gage Skahan was an unstoppable force on the ground for Iola. The Ponies’ go-to back rushed for 127 yards along with 6 TDs rushing. Mac Leonard capped off the Ponies’ defensive efforts with a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown as the clock expired.

Iola Volleyball

The eighth-grade Ponies took a trip to Garnett to start off their 2019 season. The B/C teams started off strong taking the first two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-17, but dropped the final three sets. June Khang set up her teammates efficiently and also led with five ace serves. Hallie Sutherland and Rylie Olson both recorded two kills each.

For the A team, the Ponies were unable to handle anything Anderson County sent their way. Iola dropped all three sets by scores of 8-25, 7-25 and 4-25. Coach Terri Carlin said that despite trailing by large margins, the Ponies never gave up. Those signs of resilience should lead to success in the near future.

Iola Cross Country

The Ponies started 2019 with the Anderson County Cross Country Meet. Two girls competed in the seventh-grade division. Alyssa Williams placed 34th and Madeline Wanker finished 35th. The boys finished third overall, with Cole Moyer finishing second, and Brigg Shannon, Alejandro Escalente, Ethan Riebel, Robert Warren, and Rooper Curry representing Iola.

Keira Fawson, Rebekah Coltrane, Abigail Meiwies, Cara Porter, and Jillian Ward ran for Iola in the eighth grade race. Only two boys competed for the Ponies in the eighth grade race. JJ Rutoh came in third, and Sam Sturgeon finished 34th.
