The Allen Community College baseball team grabbed one win in a four-game slate against Labette County over the weekend.
The series loss came after the Red Devils (20-19; 9-11) swept Southwestern in a couple of midweek home matchups fueled by some impressive pitching, 5-1 and 4-0. The Red Devils pitching was their Achilles heel in three losses to the Cardinals.
Game one
Allen’s Brett Buchanan served up four runs on six hits through three innings on the mound. Noe Stroer and Jack Neill then combined to give up seven runs through the final few innings of the 11-3 loss.
The Red Devils took the lead first, 2-0, in the top of the second inning before Labette plated four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-3 lead. The Cardinals then tacked on one more run in the fourth and six more in the sixth inning for the eight-run win.
Gabe Glenn and Patrick Mulligan each drove in one run and had multi-hit games for Allen. Braden Hendrix knocked a sacrifice fly and stole a base.
Game two
The Red Devil offense woke up in the second game when Colton Ayres drove in seven runs in a 16-5 victory.
Allen scored in six of the eight innings including three runs in the third and sixth innings. The Red Devils took a two-run lead in the third inning and then secured a 10-5 lead after the top of the sixth.
Brandon Harper and Hendrix each plated two runs. Cade Schupp and Garrett Rusch each drove in one run as well. Ayres’ impressive day at the plate included smashing a home run while Glenn, Rusch and Mulligan each stole one base.
Schupp started on the mound, allowing four runs on three hits through four innings. He also walked six and struck out two Cardinals. Jack Bland threw the final four innings, allowing two runs on one hit with five strikeouts.
Game three
Allen was shut out 5-0 in the third game.
The Red Devils managed four hits and three walks while Labette scratched runs across the board in the first, second, fifth and sixth innings.
