For the first time in the Registers history of Allen County Area Athletes of the Month we had a tie!
Iolas Jack Adams and Humboldts Conor Haviland received 58 votes apiece to be the male nominee.
On the girls side, Iolas Rachel Bycroft edged Marmaton Valleys Bailey Griffith.
In order to break a tie, I went to the top to get some clarification. Register editor and publisher, Susan Lynn, suggested I flip a coin. It was a best two out of three, with Haviland representing heads, and Adams on tails. Adams won both flips.
Adams is the Mustangs number-one cross country runner and has been in fine form to start the 2019 season. Adams finished first individually in meets at Anderson County and Parsons. Most recently, Adams secured second place in Iolas solo home meet of the season. This Saturday, Adams medaled at the Rim Rock competition in Lawrence by placing 12th.
When head coach Marv Smith was looking for answers after the Fillies lost their top-three cross country runners from a season ago, Bycroft fulfilled his request. Bycroft has cemented herself as Iolas number-one runner, and is coming off a third-place finish at Iolas Doc Stiles Invitational meet.
Nominations are officially now open for October. If you have an athlete you think is worthy of being featured. Email us at [email protected] or go to www.iolaregister.com/athletes-month, and include a brief explanation of why they deserve to be nominated.
