Allen County Community College’s track and field athletes will be competing today and Saturday at the 2011 Region VI Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Coffeyville.
Men’s and women’s combined events began Thursday and finished up this morning. Regular field events and running events began this afternoon.
The final day of competition is Saturday, starting at 10 a.m at Coffeyville’s Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Sophomore Trent Huling is out to defend his Region VI/Jayhawk Eastern Division championship in the 400-meter dash. Huling and sophomore Kyran Stewart ran on the Region VI/Jayhawk East championship 4×100-meter relay team last year.
The Allen County men and women were at the Southwestern College Relays in Winfield last weekend.
Huling ran a personal-best time of 47.45 seconds to win the 400-meter dash. That was just .01 seconds off the meet record. Darrlyn Bennett of ACCC was second in 48.72 seconds.
Also in the 400 meters, Zach Baldwin finished seventh in 49.77, Bryant Terry was ninth in 50.08 and Abraham Walker took 20th in 52.50 seconds.
Huling led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200-meter dash, winning in 21.45 seconds. Chris Henry posted a personal-best time of 21.61 seconds for second place, qualifying for the NJCAA national meet.
DeMario Johnson placed third in 21.71 seconds. Brandon Smith finished 10th in 22.74 seconds.
Jean Frenot was the gold medalist in the 400-meter hurdles for ACCC, winning in 53.77 seconds. Olnel Virgil was 18th in 1:02.74. Virgil took 11th in the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.95 seconds.
In the 100-meter dash, Johnson ran second in 10.76 seconds and Henry was fifth in 10.87 seconds. Travis Kyte placed 13th in the 5,000-meter run in 18 minutes, 17.68 seconds.
In the 800-meter run, Jesse Jenkins finished ninth in a personal-best time of 2:00.44. Brandon Miller was 23rd in 2:08.51 followed by Soloman Aberra in a personal-best 2:08.66 for 24th and John Thurston in 2:08.81 in 25th. Aberra ran a personal-best 4:34.54 for 26th in the 1500-meter run.
Keith Bateman placed sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 43 feet, 7 inches. J’Vente Deveaux was 10th in the long jump at 21’111⁄2” with Walker in 13th at 21’4” and Bateman in 16th at 20’9”.
Travis Venniro took ninth in the shot put with a throw of 41’8”. Julian Christian was 11th in the discus with a toss of 121’10”.
Allen County’s women were led by Audre’Ahna Harris at Southwestern. Harris was second in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:09.34 and fourth in the 100-meter high hurdles in 15.69 seconds.
Rackell Goldson placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 16’111⁄2”. She was sixth in the triple jump at 30’93⁄4”. Bridget Sears finished 16th in the shot put with a distance of 31’23⁄4”.
Nakita Casey ran seventh in the 100-meter dash in 13.33 seconds. She was ninth in the 200-meter dash in 27.67 seconds.
After this weekend’s regional and conference championship meet will be several “last chance” track meets, where athletes close to qualifying for the NJCAA national track meet can compete in an attempt to make the marks. The 2011 NJCAA National Outdoor Track and Field Championship meet is May 19-21 at Hutchinson.
