PITTSBURG — It took four days — Monday through Thursday — last week but the Region VI, Division II Golf Championship Tournament is completed.
Allen County Community College sophomore Rob Carlson is the regional champion for the second year in a row.
Unfortunately, Independence Community College broke a three-year reign of the ACCC team as Region VI, Division II champion.
“The tournament was contested over four days with numerous weather delays,” said Mike Hayes, ACCC golf coach.
Carlson shot a 234 for the 54-hole tournament. He qualified for the NJCAA Division II National Golf Tournament, May 17-20, as did the Independence team. The national tournament will be played at Goose Pond Colony in Scottsboro, Ala.
After the first 18 holes, Carlson was one stroke off the lead with a 79. Independence’s Jeff Heptig had a 78 with teammates Kel Walters at 80, Garryl Darkis at 82 and Hunter Earnhart at 83.
In round two, Carlson gained the lead by carding a 75. He was up by two strokes, 154 to Earnhart’s 156. Earnhart had the best 18 holes in the second round with a 73.
Carlson continued his steady play in round three with an 80. Walters had a 79 to finish with a 240, as did Earnhart. Carlson won by six strokes in defending his regional championship.
Independence won the team title with a total of 977. Allen County finished with 1,017 as a team.
Tim Stinnett, a sophomore, ended up with a 254, tied for fifth. Casey Bettis shot a 258, followed by Tyler Roth at 268. Chase Tjelmeland carded a 276 for the 54 holes. Bettis, Roth and Tjelmeland are ACCC freshmen.
