KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Lenzie Boring threw a no-hitter Wednesday for Allen County Community College. She was one walk away from a perfect game as the Red Devils beat host Kansas City, Kan., Community College 8-0 in six inning.
Boring faced 18 batters and struck out nine of them in the game.
Even more important is that the Red Devils swept their final Jayhawk Eastern Division/Region VI Division II doubleheader. They won the second game 11-5 to finish 16-10 in conference and 20-10 in Region VI Division II play.
Allen County (36-16) are now tied for sixth in Jayhawk East standings with Pratt. It is tied for fifth with Johnson County in Region VI action. The Red Devils will host a best 2-of-3 playoff series April 30-May 1.
The Red Devils were to have finished their season today at home in a non-conference doubleheader with Ottawa University’s junior varsity. The twin bill has been moved to Friday starting at 2 p.m. It will be sophomore day for the team.
While Boring held the Blue Devils in check from the mound, the Red Devils scored three runs in the second, one in the third then finished it off with a four-run sixth inning. Jenna Sigg singled and doubled in the game. Boring connected for two singles.
Kelsey Walters doubled. Hitting a single each were Callie Umholtz, Kelci Owens and Kylie Taylor.
The Red Devils started in the second with one gone. Owens and Taylor had back-to-back base hits. Brianne Smedley reached on an error and Denise Swanson got on with a fielder’s choice. With the bases loaded, Walters doubled to drive in three runs.
Sigg doubled in the third and scored on a one-out single by Boring.
Again with one out in the sixth, the Red Devils churned it up. Walters drew a walk and with two gone, Sigg, Umholtz and Boring all singled. Owens was hit by a pitch, Taylor walked and Smedley was hit by a pitch to force in a run. When the dust settled, four runs had crossed the plate.
Allen County pushed out to an 8-0 lead in the second game. The Red Devils scored twice in third when Javyn Carl, who was 3-for-4 in the game, doubled with one out. Erin Schwant produced a two-out, RBI double followed by Sigg’s base hit. Umholtz reached on an error as a run scored.
In the fourth, Taylor, Tesla Allison, Carl, Alex Hill and Schwant had consecutive singles after one was out in the inning. Sigg was hit by a pitch to force in a run then Umholtz drove in two runs on a base hit. Boring had an RBI single.
Kansas City used seven hits to produced four runs in its half of the fourth and added a run in the fifth. Leading 8-5, the Red Devils plated three insurance runs in the sixth.
Hill finished the game pitching around a single in each of the next two innings for the win. She gave up 11 hits, walked one and struck out five.
Carl ended up with two singles and a double while Schwant and Umholtz each had a single and a double. Allison doubled. Hitting a single each were Hill, Sigg, Boring, Owens and Taylor.
