HESSTON — Starting the season 0-4, Allen County Community College’s men turned things around and won its fourth straight game Saturday against host Hesston College. The Red Devils (4-4) downed Hesston 78-63.
Allen County’s women kept their momentum from Tuesday’s road win but unfortunately, Hesston had enough to hold the Red Devils off. Hesston defeated the ACCC women 59-51.
The Red Devil men took a 12-10 lead on a three-pointer from Seth Walden with 15:50 left in the first half. The first 10 minutes of the game was a see-saw battle but Allen County used a 10-0 run into halftime for a 41-34 advantage.
Allen County never trailed again. At the midway point of the second half, Jeff Romeus drained a trey to push the Red Devils’ lead to 59-46. There were three technical fouls in the second half — two on ACCC players Thomas Daniel and Terrence Williams and one on the Hesston coach.
Tyrone Jones led the Red Devil men with 14 points. Canon Fields added 10 points plus had two steals and three assists. Mychael Anderson handed out four assists and Ricky Hollis had two steals.
The Red Devil men shot 44 percent, 32 of 73, from the field overall and hit six three-pointers. They were 8 of 15 on free throw attempts.
Terrell Shears cleared 13 of the team’s 47 rebounds and had three blocked shots. Allen County had 21 turnovers.
Hesston got 20 points from Mahlon Jones and 15 points from Pierre Zook. Drew Emmert had 11 points. Hesston stayed in the game by cashing in on 24 of 35 free throw attempts.
Allen County’s women trailed by six points at halftime, 29-23, and made a run at Hesston in the second half.
Rackell Goldson and Miracle Davis each poured in 12 points for the Red Devils. Jamie Peel had 11 points. Allen County shot 27.5 percent, 19 of 69, from the field and 8 of 18 from the free-throw line.
Goldson and Peel had six rebounds apiece and Davis had five rebounds plus came up with five steals.
Hesston’s Mishaun Pfannenstiel scored 19 points and Tori Wheeler had 13.
Allen County’s women (3-7) are at Winfield tonight against the Southwestern junior varsity. Allen County’s men host Southwestern men’s junior varsity Tuesday.
