Allen County Community College’s Red Devils just couldn’t get “the hit” in Friday’s doubleheader at home against Pratt Community College. They lost 4-3 and 3-2.
On Saturday, the softball team’s home doubleheader with Dodge City Community College was rained out. It has been rescheduled for April 3.
Then Sunday, the Red Devils got buzzed by host Cowley County Community College’s Tigers, who are ranked No. 4 in NJCAA, Division 2, 8-3 in the first game and 8-0 in five innings for the second contest.
The four losses put the Red Devils at 2-6 in Jayhawk Eastern Division play. They are 14-12 overall.
Allen County is back in action Saturday at Independence for a conference twin bill.
The Red Devils were up 1-0 against Pratt in the opener Friday. With two gone, Jenna Sigg singled and stole second base then went to third on an error. Callie Umholtz had an RBI single.
Pratt scored three runs in the top of the fourth to gain the lead. Allen County answered with a run in its half of the inning.
The Beavers added a run in the fifth for a 4-2 lead. With one out, Umholtz and Kylie Taylor had back-to-back doubles to score a run. But that was it.
Lenzie Boring was the losing pitcher. She gave up six hits, walked two and recorded 10 strikeouts.
Umholtz and Taylor each had a double and a single in the game. Kelsey Walters and Sigg had a single apiece.
In the second game, ACCC’s Alex Hill and Pratt’s Elizabeth Wahl had a pitching duel going. The teams were scoreless through four innings.
Pratt used three hits and an Allen County error to plate two runs in the fifth inning. A walk and a hit pushed another run in for the Beavers in the sixth.
Allen County got a run in the bottom of the sixth. Sigg hit a solo home run with two gone in the inning.
In the seventh, Taylor singled but was out on a fielder’s choice by Kelci Owens. Owens swiped second base. Tesla Allison doubled in a run with two gone. Ashley Ribelin singled.
Pratt went to Samantha Rice to close out the game on the mound. Rice got ACCC’s Walters to fly out to end the game.
Hill allowed eight hits, walked one and struck out one.
Sigg had a home run and a single and Taylor hit two singles. Allison doubled. Denise Swanson, Umholtz and Ribelin each had a single.
At Arkansas City on Sunday, Cowley County wiped out a 1-0 lead by the Red Devils with a five-run third inning. It was highlighted by a two-run home run by Bri Akers and a two-run triple by Haley Heincker.
Cowley County was up 5-2 when it scored three runs on two home runs in the fifth. Nikki Cuthbertson had a two-run shot and Courtney Rash had a solo home run.
The Red Devils produced a run in the seventh but lost 8-3. Boring pitched and gave up eight hits while striking out out six.
Umholtz had two singles in the game. Boring and Swanson each doubled. Sigg, Taylor and Allison had a single apiece.
The Tigers cruised to an 8-0 win in five innings in the second game. Hill allowed 13 hits and walked one with one strikeout.
Taylor had two singles for ACCC. Umholtz and Kayla Johnston each singled.
Cuthbertson had a two-run home run in the first for the Tigers. Akers hit a solo home run for Cowley in the third inning. They were up 4-0 when they scored four runs in the fifth.
