ACCC softball team has tough go of it

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — Not much went Allen Community College Red Devils’ way on Saturday in the Midwest JUCO Classic at Broken Arrow, Okla. Rain and wet field conditions washed out the second day of action of the Classic.

With three losses on Saturday in the junior college event, the ACC softball team fell to 11-7 overall. The Red Devils take a 1-1 mark into Tuesday’s Jayhawk Eastern Division doubleheader at Fort Scott. First pitch is at 2 p.m.

Allen hosts Cottey College for a non-conference twin bill Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Seminole (Okla.) State College defeated Allen 9-1 to begin the Red Devils’ day. Leading 2-0 after two innings, Seminole had back-to-back three-run innings to lead 8-1 at the end of four.

Allen’s run came in the fourth when Lauren Poertner reached on a one-out error. Maecy Charleston was hit by a pitch and Ashley Ribelin singled to load the bases. Kayla Van Vliet was hit by a pitch to force in the run.

Alex Hill, the losing pitcher for Allen, had the only hit, a single, for ACC. Hill worked four innings and charged with eight runs on seven hits and four walks. Hill struck out five. Audra Nelson pitched one inning, gave up one run on one hit and one walk.

Northeastern Oklahoma (NEO) used a six-run third to break open the game. NEO had three home runs in that inning on its way to a 12-4 win.

Keelyn Bonar was the losing pitcher for Allen, pitching three innings and giving up 11 runs on 11 hits. Nelson threw 1 2/3 innings and allowed one run on one hit and one walk.

Allen got two singles each from Hill, Erin Schwant and Paige Rothwell. Bonar and Alexus Douglas had a base hit apiece.

In the third inning, Rothwell singled and ended up at third on an error. Hill’s single drove in Rothwell then Schwant had a bunt single. With two gone, Bonar had an RBI single.

Allen added two more runs in the fourth and all the action came after two outs had been recorded. Mary Reilly reached on an error followed by singles from Rothwell and Hill. Schwant loaded the bases with a base hit and a passed ball allowed the second run to come home.

The Red Devils’ rallied but came up short in a 3-2 loss to Des Moines Area Community College. Nelson went the distance on the mound for ACC, giving up six hits, issuing four walks and striking out six.

Des Moines Area was up 3-0 after four innings. Rothwell connected for a one-out single in the fifth for the Red Devils. Hill singled and both base runners moved up a base on a passed ball. Ribelin delivered a two-run base hit with two gone.

Rothwell and Hill each had two singles in the game. Ribelin, Schwant and Charleston had a single each.
