ACCC softball hitting stride

HESSTON — Allen County Community College’s Red Devil softball team finished a four-game road trip over the weekend with three straight wins.
The Red Devils stayed in the mix in the top half of the NJCAA Division II Region VI race with a sweep of Hesston College Saturday. That came after a split of a Jayhawk Eastern Division/Re-gion VI doubleheader at Hutchinson Friday.
Allen County improved to 14-8 in Region VI play and 28-14 overall. The Red Devils take a 10-8 Jayhawk East mark into today’s conference doubleheader at Highland Community College.
Lenzie Boring pitched a four-hit shutout in the first game with Hesston. Boring (17-7) walked two and struck out eight in a 4-0 win.
The Red Devils took advantage of two Hesston errors in the third inning. Denise Swanson and Jori Graf had singles and Jenna Sigg doubled in the inning, as part of a three-run outburst.
Allen County added a run in the fourth. With one out, Kylie Taylor drew a walk and scored on a double by Kayla Johnston.
Graf was 3-for-4 with three singles and Sigg had a single and a double. Swanson hit two singles. Kelci Owens and Callie Umholtz each had a single.
Allen County had to tie up the game twice in the second contest. Hesston was up 1-0 when the Red Devils produced a run in the second inning. Sigg singled, stole second and scored on an error.
In the fourth inning, Sigg reached on a fielder’s choice and went to third on a throw then scored on an error. The game was tied at 2-2.
Taylor drew a walk to open the fifth for ACCC and moved to second on a passed ball. With one out, Alex Hill — the starting pitcher — singled and Owens came up with an RBI single to put ACCC up 3-2.
Hill (11-7) and the Red Devils worked out of trouble in the fifth and sixth innings as Hesston left the tying run on base both times. Hill went six innings and was charged with two runs on seven hits and had one strikeout.
Boring came on for the save, working a 1-2-3 seventh. She struck out one.
Sigg had two singles and two stolen bases. Owens, Umholtz and Hill each had a single.
On Friday, Boring was the losing pitcher in a 1-0 loss to host Hutchinson. Hutchinson scored its run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Allen County got a single apiece from Sigg, Umholtz, Taylor and Owens.
Hutchinson took a 1-0 lead in the second on a walk, a single and an ACCC error. Hill didn’t give up another hit until the sixth and only walked one more in the game. She struck out five in the 8-1 win.
The Red Devils broke out of its scoreless skid with three runs in the sixth. Hill got a base hit followed by singles from Graf and Umholtz. Sigg singled in another run and Kelsey Waters’ double drove in a run.
Allen County scored five more runs in the seventh. Umholtz had a two-run single in the inning as the Red Devils used four hits and two Hutchinson errors to get five runs plated.
Umholtz had three singles in the game while Graf, Sigg and Boring each hit two singles. Walters double and Hill singled.
