Allen County Community College’s women posted their first win of the 2011 season on the soccer pitch Wednesday. The ACCC men ran into a buzzsaw losing.
It was the home opener for the Red Devil soccer teams. They hosted first-year programs from Northwest Kansas Technical College of Goodland.
The Red Devil women rolled up a 5-1 victory over the Maverick women. Malia Talbert netted two goals for Allen County, Kayla Besmer, Danielle Wilbur and Autumn Ferrell each had a goal.
“I am very pleased where the women are at this time,” said Doug Desmarteau, ACCC head soccer coach. “We still need to improve our team defending but we are improving every game and that is all I can ask.”
Desmarteau said the Red Devil women have some very good players who play off of each other very well “and that chemistry on the field is going to be key this season.” The women are 1-2 on the season.
Allen County’s men may have faced a first-year program team in the Mavericks but the Mavericks have five international players — four from Brazil and one from Peru. Northwest Tech won the game 5-1 as ACCC fell to 0-3.
The lone goal for the Red Devils was scored by George Uttute. The Mavericks led 3-0 at halftime.
“The men have been very inconsistent to this point. We play great in spurts and really bad at other times,” Desmarteau said. “We need to figure out a way to come out and play from the opening whistle.
“We’ve been playing great after the first 20 or 30 minutes of each game. We have had a few injuries and suspensions that have hindered us a little so far.”
Allen County’s teams host Hesston’s squads next Wednesday. The women’s game is at 2 p.m. followed by the men’s at 4 p.m. on the ACCC field.
