EMPORIA — The first outdoor track meet of Allen County Community College’s 2011 season was a small one. But the Red Devil athletes had a strong showing at Saturday’s Emporia State Spring Open.
Kyran Stewart not only won the 100-meter dash in 10.36 seconds, but he also posted a NJCAA national meet qualifying time. Stewart finished second in the 200 meters in 21.46 seconds, also a national qualifying time.
Stewart combined with Chris Henry, DeMario Johnson and Trent Huling to win the 4×100-meter relay race in 40.70 seconds. That, too, qualified them for the national track meet.
Allen County’s 4×400-meter relay team of Darrlyn Bennett, Jean Frenot, Jesse Jenkins and Bryant Terry captured a gold medal. The foursome ran the race in 3 minutes, 23.72 seconds.
Brandon Miller and Frenot finished second and third in the 400-meter dash. Miller’s time was 49.11 seconds as Frenot ran the distance in 50.25 seconds. Bennett took fourth in 50.60 seconds and Brandon Smith was seventh in 53.98 seconds.
Huling just missed qualifying for nationals in the 200-meter dash, finishing third in 21.69 seconds. Henry was fifth in 22.18 followed by Abraham Walker in 22.33, Zachery Baldwin in 22.42 and Smith in 22.43. J’Vente Deveaux was 11th in 23.73 and John Thompson was 12th in 24.47.
DeMario Johnson placed fourth in the 100-meter dash in 10.63 seconds. Baldwin was fifth in 11.02 and Thompson was sixth in 11.93.
Jenkins placed seventh in the 800-meter run in 2:03.65. Soloman Aberra took fifth in the 1500-meter run in 4:36.56 with Patrick Johnson in sixth at 4:49.72 and Travis Kyte in seventh at 4:50.73.
Keith Bateman captured third in the triple jump with a leap of 45 feet, 113⁄4 inches. He also was sixth in the long jump at 20’81⁄2”.
Travis Venniro was third in the shot put with a throw of 42’11. DeAndre Speed placed fifth at 32’81⁄2” and Julian Christian was sixth at 30’9”. Christian took sixth in the discus with a toss of 112’8”.
THE ACCC WOMEN had three second-place performances on the day.
Audre’Ahna Harris was second in the 200-meter dash in 25.6 seconds and second the 100-meter high hurdles in 15.49 seconds. Rackell Goldson was fifth in the hurdles in 21.87 seconds.
Nakita Casey took the silver medal in the 100-meter dash in 12.83 seconds. Akilah Threadgill was fourth in 13.74 and Kasie House placed fifth in 14.02.
Casey placed fifth in the 200-meter dash in 27.69 seconds followed by Goldson in 28.65, Threadgill at 29.40 and House in eighth at 29.53 seconds.
Goldson finished third in the long jump with a leap of 16’11⁄2”. Threadgill was fourth at 14’91⁄4”.
Bridget Sears placed fourth in the shot put with a toss of 31’41⁄2”.
The ACCC athletes travel to Oxford, Miss., this weekend for the Ole’ Miss Invitational.
