Both Allen County soccer teams got wins on Saturday. The women beat Cowley County 1-0 while the men won 2-1, earning their first conference win of the season.
It was a defensive battle for both teams but especially the women as both Cowley and the Lady Devils went into the half still knotted up at 0-0.
The defense kept a lot of the pressure off of freshman keeper Megan Cossairt who put up a shutout with four saves recorded.
Early in the second period, Allen County received a yellow card but avoided a Tiger score on the ensuing penalty kick.
At the 72-minute mark of the contest, Cowley’s Luisa Marschhausen was yellow carded, bringing Allen’s Brynn Suddeth up for a penalty kick which she nailed to take the lead with a little less than 18 minutes left.
The Lady Devils held on and got their second win over the Tigers this season. They are now 6-6 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
Meanwhile, the Allen men overcame an early deficit to come away 2-1 winners.
Throughout the early part of the first half, neither team was able to break through and get a goal until around 15 minutes in. Cowley played a ball over the top of the Red Devil’s defense to their forward who scored from the corner of the 18-yard box.
Allen allowed a couple more shots on goal that keeper Alan Ibarra blocked as the half ended with the Devils trailing by one.
The second half started much like the first with Cowley coming close to taking a 2-0 lead but they couldn’t convert. Allen had a couple of opportunities to score early themselves but they couldn’t get anything going.
With the second half coming to an end, the Red Devils knew they needed to create something to come back from being a goal down. With 10 minutes left in the game, freshman Brevin Allen received a pass from Austin George and put it in the back of the net to make the score 1-1.
After the goal the Red Devils started to gain some momentum.
With less than five minutes left in the game, the Red Devils got fouled right outside of Cowley’s 18 yard box. Freshman Wilmer Canales stepped up to the ball to try and give the Red Devils the lead right at the end. The shot ricocheted off the wall, hit the bottom of the crossbar and went in.
The whole Allen team came together on the sidelines to celebrate what ended up being the game winning goal.
The job wasn’t completely done as there was still a couple minutes left on the clock. The Red Devils kept their composure and finished the game strong to capture their first conference win of the season.
The Allen men improve to 3-7-1 overall and 1-4-1 in conference play.
The Red Devils will travel to take on Kansas City Kansas Community College today.
