COFFEYVILLE — Aaron Jackson’s three-pointer at the end of regulation forced overtime Saturday. Allen County Community College’s Red Devil men were going toe-to-toe with host Coffeyville Community College’s Red Ravens.
“We had missed three two-attempt free throws before that and Aaron’s three tied the game at the end,” said Mike Hayes, ACCC head coach. “We got the overtime tip and Erik (Law) hit a three. We were up until there were three minutes left and Aaron fouled out.”
The Red Devil men were low on substitutes. Leading scorer and rebounder Andra Bailey, a sophomore, was not at the game because of personal leave to attend a funeral. Anthony Clagett, sophomore point guard, is still out with an ankle injury. Chris Lee played with an injured hand but could not finish the game.
Coffeyville caught Allen County and notched a 92-88 win. The Red Ravens improved to 6-1 in Jayhawk Eastern Division play and 12-7 overall. Coffeyville is tied for second in the Jayhawk East.
Allen County’s men dropped to 4-3 in conference play and 9-9 overall. The Red Devils host Labette Community College of Parsons (2-5, 7-12) Wednesday.
“It was a great game and our guys played really, really well. We competed well,” Hayes said. “Hitting 13 threes was great but we were disappointed going 15 of 26 from the free-throw line.”
Freshman Dennis Rumph was “a force inside” for the Red Devils plus hit two big threes. Rumph led all scorers with 26 points plus had seven rebounds and three steals.
Erik Law continued to play well and scored 18 points. Keevis Tukes nailed four treys on his way to 16 points and he had seven rebounds. Both are freshmen. Jackson ended up with 15 points.
The Red Devils led 42-41 at halftime and most of the second half. Jackson’s three at the end of regulation tied at 81-81 before Coffeyville outscored Allen County 11-7 in overtime.
Allen County shot 51 percent, 30 of 59, from the field. The Red Ravens shot 47 percent, 36 of 76, from the field and went 13 of 16 from the line. Coffeyville outrebounded Allen County 52 to 27.
Keith Biggers led Coffeyville with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Stacy Wilson and Jermaine Bransford each had 15 points. Kevin Broussard had 13 points and Justin Johnson added 10 points.
THE ACCC WOMEN dropped a 96-58 decision to Coffeyville’s Lady Red Ravens Saturday. Coffeyville is 6-1 and 16-5 tied atop the Jayhawk East with Allen County’s Wednesday night opponent, Labette Community College of Parsons (6-1, 16-3).
Allen County’s women are 1-6, 7-12. They host 22nd-ranked Labette Wednesday at 6 p.m.
The Red Devil women were down 40-22 at halftime. They shot 36.5 percent, 19 of 52, from the field and hit 14 of 20 free throw attempts. Coffeyville was 38 of 77, 49 percent, from the field and downed 12 of 20 free throw tries.
Jazmynn Johnson led ACCC with 12 points and Danielle Best added 11 points. Breanna Shaw was held to nine points in the game as she grabbed nine rebounds. Kyneshia Nisbett had four assists.
Coffeyville had six players reach double figures in scoring. Sheay Longstaff led the way with 13 points followed by Erin Boyd-Redmond and Tasha Cannon with 12 points each, Arienne Smith with 11 and Morgan Rolls and Tymeshe Gibson with 10 points each.
