COFFEYVILLE — It was the final match of the regular season. Allen County Community College’s Red Devils and host Coffeyville Community College’s Red Ravens gave fans plenty for their money.
The two Jayhawk Eastern Division volleyball teams took the match to the limit. Coffeyville won in five sets 25-16, 23-25, 27-29, 25-15, 15-11.
The loss put the Red Devils at 3-7 in Jayhawk East play and 4-7 in Region VI, Division II action. Allen County finished the regular season at 16-19.
Now, the Red Devils turn their attention to preparing for the NJCAA Region VI, Division II district tournament. Allen County is the seventh seed and will play at second-seeded Cowley County (29-3) on Nov. 5.
Cowley County, ranked No. 1 in NJCAA Division II, was upended by No. 3 ranked Johnson County Wednesday. Both ended up 9-1 in Jayhawk East play and 10-1 in Region VI action.
“It was an intense roller coaster ride for us,” said Jessica Peters, ACCC head coach.
After losing the first set, the Red Devils pushed hard to win the second set. Andrea Miller put down a kill for the set winner.
Peters said the Red Devils had solid serve receive, coverage and blocking in the third set. Again the Red Devils had the lead but Coffeyville came back to tie.
“We were able use the block at crucial moments to help secure the win. Nicole Rockhold sealed the deal in the third set with a sharp cross court attack,” Peters said.
Coffeyville tied up the match by winning the fourth set. Allen County had three consecutive errors reversing the mo-mentum in the fifth set, which went to Coffeyville.
Rockhold led the Red Devils with 20 kills, one solo block and two assisted blocks at the net. She had 17 digs. Allison Jenicke put down 18 kills and had two solo blocks. Miller finished with 11 kills, two solo blocks and one assisted block.
Makhala Giardina had seven kills and one solo block. Erika Mack was credited with 28 set assists, two kills and 13 digs.
Casey Droddy put up 23 set assists. Nicole Reed came up with 26 defensive digs and served two aces. Morgan Scott had one service ace.
