TOPEKA — Cowley County Community College’s Tigers scored a run in the first inning and made it stand up in Sunday’s losers’ bracket final with Allen County Community College’s Red Devils.
The Red Devils were ousted from NJCAA Region VI, Division II District E contention by the Tigers, who won 1-0. Cowley County lost 2-1 to Highland Community College’s Scotties in the championship game.
It was a pitching duel between Allen County’s Lenzie Boring and Cowley County’s Taylor Parsons. The Tigers used a single, a bunt single and a ground-out to produce the lone run of the game.
A bunt single by Allen County’s Erin Schwant in the sixth inning broke up a no-hitter bid by Parsons. The only other hit for the Red Devils was a base hit by Kylie Taylor in the seventh inning.
Boring, who finished 25-10 with an earned run average (ERA) of 1.18, allowed eight hits, walked three and struck out three. Allen County left five on base in the seven innings of play.
Allen County opened the region tournament with a 3-2 loss to Highland Saturday. The Red Devils stayed alive in the tournament with an 8-4 win over Pratt.
In the opener, the Red Devils scored two runs in the first inning. Kelsey Walters singled and scored on a one-out triple by Jenna Sigg. Sigg came across home plate when Callie Umholtz had a sacrifice fly.
Highland scored a run in the second, then tied up the game with a run in the fifth. With one gone in the seventh, the Scotties used a triple and single to produce the game winning run.
Boring took the loss on the mound for ACCC, as she allowed seven hits, walked four and struck out eight. Highland’s freshman Zu-zana Kudernatschova of the Czech Republic was the winning pitcher.
Taylor hit a single and a double and Walters had two singles. Sigg tripled and Umholtz doubled. Boring hit a single.
The Red Devils bounced back against Pratt. They scored two runs each in the third and fourth innings to go up 4-1. It was 5-4 when Allen County added three insurance runs.
Taylor singled to start the inning but was still on base with two gone. Walters connected for an RBI base hit. Alex Hill reached on a bunt single and Sigg reached on a fielder’s choice. Um-holtz’s base hit drove in a run.
Hill (16-9) worked five innings for the win, giving up four runs on six hits and had three strikeouts. Boring worked out of a two-on, no-out situation in the sixth by striking out the side. Boring notched two more strikeouts in a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
Javyn Carl hit three singles in the game while Boring had two doubles. Walters and Umholtz had two singles each. Hill, Taylor and Tesla Allison had a single each.
Highland and Region VI District D champion La-bette advance to the NJCAA Division II national tournament, May 19-21, in Bloomington, Ill.
