KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Allen County Community College’s Red Devils continued their trend on the baseball field this season — splitting doubleheaders.
The Red Devils lost a 7-6 decision in the first game Saturday to host Kansas City, Kan., Community College’s Blue Devils. Allen County led the game from the second inning until the Blue Devils scored two in the sixth.
Then in the nine-inning second game, Allen County rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth to win 6-5.
Allen County is 12-14 in Jayhawk Eastern Division play. The Red Devils are 18-18 overall and tied with Labette Community College for fifth place in the Jayhawk East. Both teams have 10 games left.
Allen County hosts Independence (13-19, 19-25) Tuesday. The Pirates are sitting behind the Red Devils and Cardinals in the standings.
The first game starts at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Red Devil Field.
David Ormiston took the pitching loss in the first game Saturday. He went five innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits and one walk and two hit batters. He struck out five. Aaron Burke pitched one inning, giving up one hit and one walk.
Brad Alberts connected for three singles. Michael Samuel singled and doubled. Brayden Brumley and Marcus Peavler each had two singles.
Wyatt Hall doubled and Ryan Fike singled.
Allen County scored two runs in the second with two gone. Hall and Samuel had back-to-back doubles and Brumley singled. Brumley stole second and Samuel scored the second run on a wild throw.
In the fourth inning, Peavler singled, Bryce Williams was hit by pitch and Hall was on by a fielder’s choice. Samuel singled in a run then Hall stole home. Brumley singled and Fike had an RBI sacrifice fly.
The Red Devils got a run in the fifth to go up 6-2. Kansas City scored three runs in the fifth then two in the sixth.
The Red Devils bounced back to win the second game. They scored one in the first inning. Brumley doubled and came home on a two-out single by Alberts.
Alberts doubled in the fourth with the score at 1-1. Michael Schell put down a squeeze bunt single. Curtiss Bunch’s fielder’s choice pushed home a run. Hall singled to drive in another.
Brumley hit a solo home run in the fifth. That put the Red Devils up 4-2. Kansas City tied the game with two runs in the sixth and went up 5-4 with a run in the eighth.
Bunch doubled to open the ninth. With one out, Hall drew a walk and Samuel was safe on an error as a run scored to tie the game.
Hall went all the way to third on the error. Brumley doubled to left center to drive in the go-ahead run.
Allen County’s Aaron Burke came on in relief to get the save in the ninth. He allowed one hit and struck out one. Cody Wren, who pitched one inning and gave up one run on two hits and a walk plus had one strikeout, got the win.
Bryan Couch started on the hill for ACCC. He went six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts. John Michael Moore worked one inning, giving up a walk with a strikeout. Brumley hit two doubles, a home run and a single. Alberts had a single and a double. Bunch and Conner McCrite each had a double.
Hitting a single each were Hall, Samuel and Schell.
