ACCC baseball team splits with Panthers

CHANUTE — One rally worked. The next one didn’t for Allen County Community College’s Red Devils.
The Red Devils faced host Neosho County Community College’s Panthers Friday in a Jayhawk Eastern Division doubleheader. They trailed most of the time in both games.
In the opener, the Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the fifth. Allen County manufactured two runs in the sixth to take the lead.
Ryan Fike singled and Michael Schell reached on an error. Brad Alberts, who was 4-for-4 in the game, singled in the tying run. Wyatt Hall came up with a two-out RBI single.
Neosho County regained the lead, 3-2, with a two-run bottom half of the sixth.
When Marcus Peavler was hit by a pitch to start the seventh, Allen County took advantage of it. Peavler stole second base and moved to third on an out. Peavler came home on a wild pitch.
The teams went into extra innings. Three straight singles by Hall, Brayden Brumley and Bretton Ater loaded the bases in the eighth. Peavler’s fielder’s choice got a run in then Fike singled in a run.
Allen County’s Aaron Burke retired the Panthers in order in the eighth of the 5-3 win. Burke pitched 22⁄3 innings of scoreless baseball. He allowed one hit and struck out two.
Matt Stalcup started the game for ACCC. He worked 51⁄3 innings, giving up three runs on six hits, one walk and two hit batters. He struck out seven. Ben Pearson gave up one hit and one walk.
Alberts doubled and had three singles. Ater hit a single and a double. Fike, Hall and Brumley each had two singles. Bryce Williams had a single.
Neosho County held a 2-0 lead after three innings of the second game. The Red Devils scored a run in the fifth but then gave up three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Trailing 5-1, the Red Devils rallied again. Fike Doubled to open the seventh. With one out, Michael Samuel singled then Hall cranked out a three-run home run. It was 5-4.
But the Red Devils could not get the tying run on. A strikeout and a ground-out followed the Hall blast and the game ended.
Peavler had three singles in the game. Samuel had two singles.
Allen County used four pitchers in the game. Kyle Grana was the starter, going 32⁄3 innings. He allowed two runs on five hits and five walks plus struck out four.
Devin Hess pitched one-third of an inning, giving up one run on one hit. Pearson allowed two runs on one hit.
Bryan Couch threw two scoreless innings at the end. He allowed three hits, walked one and struck out one.
Allen County is 4-4 in Jayhawk East play. It stands at 10-8 for the season.
The Red Devils were to have hosted Kansas City, Kan., for two games Saturday but the games were rained out.
The Kansas City, Kan., doubleheader has been rescheduled for Sunday, April 25.
Allen County travels to Independence Tuesday then to Fort Scott Thursday.
