Allen Community College women’s soccer beat Garden City 2-1 Wednesday afternoon — but the spread could have been much wider.
“Honestly, I think we played like we were on autopilot,” coach Jeremy McGinnis said. “We weren’t really up for the game even though we should have been. We played very flat.”
After giving up an early goal to go down 1-0, Payton Huckabay scored off a cross from Lexi Godlove to tie the game. The Red Devils were tied 1-1 going into the half.
With about 35 minutes left in the match, Natalie Leiker played a ball down the field, where a streaking Godlove got in front of the last Garden City defender to score the go-ahead and eventual winning goal.
Despite winning, McGinnis said the team had plenty of opportunities to put Garden City away.
“In the first game of the year when we were tied 2-2 at halftime, we went up 6-2 in the second,” McGinnis said. “That could have easily been today, we just ended up dropping to (the opponent’s) level at times.”
For this game, McGinnis said the girls knew they were capable of better.
“We were talking about the characteristics of good teams and one of the characteristics is that they can play bad and win,” McGinnis said. “We definitely did that today. We didn’t play very well. It’s a win, but you can tell by the reaction of the girls that they didn’t think they played to the level that they could have.”
Allen beat Barton on Saturday for the first time in school history. McGinnis said the team came to play on that day.
“That was amazing,” McGinnis said. “I thought the girls were buzzing, they rolled up. That’s the thing we talk about. Good teams always try to play at a high level.”
Since the season is young, McGinnis is still figuring out where to put people on the field.
“We are still trying to figure out who can be plugged into certain positions,” McGinnis said. “We’re trying to see who can step up and play those roles.”
The Red Devils are scheduled to play Tuesday in Wilburton, Okla. However, the team’s field isn’t ready for play, and may become a home game for ACC.
