COLBY — It took 55 long days.
Thanksgiving came and went. So did Christmas. And so did New Year’s.
But on Wednesday, the Allen Community College women’s basketball team finally broke its nine-game losing streak with a 65-56 victory over Colby Community College — 55 days after its last win on the season.
The Lady Red Devils improved to 5-11 overall and 1-5 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference following Wednesday’s road win.
During Allen’s nine-game losing skid that started back on Nov. 14, coach Todd Buchanan saw his team average just 58.2 points per game.
With an offense that struggled to score and a defense that didn’t fare much better on its side of the court, the Lady Red Devils were outscored by an average of 24.3 points per game.
But both aspects of Allen’s game came through Wednesday. The offense scored just enough points to keep the Lady Red Devils in the contest while the defense held its opponent to its lowest point total since Nov. 13 — the squad’s last victory.
Allen hopes to continue its winning ways in its next matchup Saturday at home against Cloud County Community College.
The Allen men’s team also traveled to Colby on Wednesday, but it wasn’t as fortunate as the women. The Red Devils lost, 94-84, in overtime to drop to 9-7 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
