Allen Community College’s soccer teams had big wins Tuesday afternoon against Kansas City-Kansas Community College.
The women were first up and won 4-1. Lexi Godlove scored the first goal from an assist from Kyleigh Rowe. Madison Evans then assisted Rowe on a goal. Hailey Melin scored a goal assisted by Kristen Brinkman. All three of these goals were scored in the first half.
In the second, KCK scored first on a breakaway. Allen answered back with an unassisted goal from Carlee Brinkman.
The Red Devils are now ranked no. 18 in the nation. Coach Jeremy McGinnis said the ranking solidifies the women’s play all season long.
“The girls have really bought into it — the way Hiram (Raby) and I are running the program,” McGinnis said. “They believe in it and have seen the spoils of it for being successful.”
The win marks the most in the history of the program. Allen is now 10-1-2. Last season, McGinnis coached the team to nine wins, which was the most in the history.
“I got it last year, so I beat my own record so that was pretty cool,” McGinnis said. “But, it’s good to keep things going. I think it’s very important to always try to push yourself.”
McGinnis called Wednesday’s game a team win.
“I thought it was awesome. Everyone got to play, everyone was a part of it,” McGinnis said. “I told them I wanted to shoot more and that’s what they did.”
THE MEN’S TEAM won 7-2, thanks in part to Dom Nwagwu’s four goals. The win snapped a nine-game losing streak.
“I think we are kind of growing up a little bit. We went down to Texas and played some really good teams — top 10 teams in the nation,” coach Doug Desmarteau said. “We competed really well and figured out the speed and the level we need to play at.
“Our schedule is just ridiculous and these freshmen have needed to grow up in a short amount of time. So, hopefully they take this win and it will be good.”
Nwagwu’s goals were assited by Chase Tonkin, John Francious and two from Neil Jantzen.
“I mean honestly, I’m crediting the whole team because most of the goals were passes that I just had to tap in,” Nwagwu said.
Caleb Cowsert scored a goal from an assist by Nwagwu. Pedro Ortega and Francious each had an unassisted goal.
Both teams travel to Johnson County Community College Friday. The women play at 2 p.m. and the men follow at 4 p.m.
