An article in Monday’s Register incorrectly reported Gabby Ruiz missed competing at the Jayhawk Conference/Region VI Championships over the weekend.
It was her teammate, Danae McGee, who didn’t compete because of a family emergency.
We regret the error.
Ruiz competed, and had a prominent role in the 10,000-meter run, Coach Vince DeGrado said.
She was winning the race, but stepped off the course intentionally to give the second- and third-place runners a chance to qualify for the national tournament.
Hutchinson Community College’s Diosha Johnson wound up winning the race, and an automatic bid to nationals.
Ruiz already had qualified for the national competition.
“What Gabby did was pretty special,” DeGrado said. “It went unnoticed to most people.”
The national competition is May 16-18 at Hutchinson Community College.
