ACC baseball is swept by Barton County to end season

The Allen County Red Devil baseball team ended its season over the weekend after losing in the first round of the Region VI Tournament to Barton County.

The opening round, which was hosted at the Cougars’ home field in Great Bend, started on Friday with a 7-0 loss and ended on Saturday with a 9-7 loss.

The Red Devils end the season with a 25-27 record paired with a 14-22 conference mark.

In game one, Barton got out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning. The Cougars held Allen County scoreless for the entire nine innings while Barton added on three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to finish the Red Devils off.

Starter Nate Postlethwait earned the loss, going five innings and allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

The Red Devils had just four hits in the game. Right fielder Aaron Mason and first baseman Sky-Lar Culver turned in two hits each.

Barton got off to a 4-0 lead again in the second game after a run in both the first and second innings and two runs in the bottom of the fourth.

The Red Devils tied the game in the top of the fourth and took their first lead in the top of the fifth by one run.

Barton jumped back ahead in the bottom of the inning, putting up five runs and taking a 9-5 lead.

Both teams were scoreless in the seventh and eighth before the Red Devils attempted to rally in the top of the ninth.

Allen County scored two runs before flying out to end the inning with the tying runs stuck on first and second.

Reliever Jacob Potter earned the loss allowing five runs on six hits anda walk in two innings. He struck out two.

Culver, designated hitter Nathan Best and shortstop Baxter Mays each turned in three hits while second baseman Garrison Greer put up two hits.

The Red Devils will return 25 freshman from this season’s team going into the 2018 season.
