OTTAWA — Iola American Legion AA Indians captured the Ottawa Legion tournament title Sunday. The AA Indians finished off a 6-0 run in the tournament with a 3-0 win over Paola in the title game.
Drew Walden drew a walk to open the fifth inning then Devon Conner worked a two-out base-on-balls. Levi Ashmore and Clint Heffern followed with singles.
All the scoring was done in the fifth. Jerrik Sigg threw a one-hitter and had seven strikeouts in six innings of work. Ashmore closed the door in the seventh with two strikeouts.
Other hits in the game were a double by Ashmore and a single by Dalton Smith.
Iola opened its 2012 season over the weekend. It downed Emporia AAA 5-0 in the first game of the tournament Friday then whipped Baldwin 10-2.
Sigg got the win against Emporia plus had two singles. Smith doubled. Ashmore, Heffern and Corey Taylor each singled.
Jarred Latta and Mason Coons pitched against Baldwin. Iola scored six runs in the first inning. Sigg had a single and a double and Walden hit two singles. Hitting a single each were Ashmore, Heffern, Taylor, Kris Collins and Braden Larson.
Iola beat Turner 1-0 on Saturday. Smith, Ashmore and Coons pitched for the Indians. Sigg had a single and a double. Coons doubled. Heffern, Smith and Latta each singled.
A seven-run third inning bolstered the Indians to an 11-3 win over Ottawa A. Taylor was the winning pitcher with Larson and Coons pitching in relief.
Coons had a grand slam in that third inning followed by a solo home run by Walden. Coons also had a single. Ashmore doubled. Sigg and Latta had a single and a double apiece. Heffern, Smith and Conner each singled.
Iola decked Burlington 10-2 in five innings to reach the championship game. Latta threw a three hitter and had seven strikeouts.
Walden and Collins each had two singles. Hitting a single apiece were Ashmore, Heffern and Taylor.
The AA Indians don’t have a home game until June 21. Head coach Mike Taylor said the team’s home field — the Allen Community College baseball field — is being worked on and won’t be ready until later this month.
Iola AA goes to Baldwin Tuesday.
