AA Indians split doubleheader

OTTAWA — Iola American Legion Post 15’s AA Indians racked up their 17th straight victory Saturday afternoon.
The Indians shut out host Ottawa 4-0 behind the one-hit pitching of Ethan Ericson. They scored two runs in the fourth to break a scoreless tie.
A two-run home run by Jerrik Sigg in the fifth added a buffer. The Indians had 10 hits in the game.
Iola did suffer its second loss of the season but it took Ottawa major overtime to get the 6-5 victory. It came on a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 11th inning.
Iola is 17-2 overall. The AA Indians go to Chanute Tuesday, then host Paola Thursday.
Ericson held Ottawa to an infield single in the first game Saturday. He issued eight walks, hit two batters and struck out 10.
Sigg had a single plus the home run. Ryan Latta and Corey Taylor each had two singles. Dalton Smith doubled. Hitting a single each were Levi Ashmore, Drew Walden and Mason Coons.
In the second game, Iola began with a run in the first but fell behind when Ottawa scored three runs in the second. The Indians pulled even with single runs in the third and top of the fifth.
Ottawa took the lead again with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Devon Conner was hit by a pitch to leadoff Iola’s seventh. Ashmore drew a walk and so did Sigg with one out. Walden’s double drove in the tying runs.
That was it for Iola. The Indians weren’t able to take advantage of scoring opportunities over the next four innings.
Sigg started on the mound and went nine innings for Iola. He was charged with five runs on eight hits, five walks and one hit batter. He struck out four.
Ryan Latta pitched one scoreless inning. He allowed one hit, walked two and struck out one. The loss went to Walden, who pitched in the 11th, giving up one run on one hit.
Walden had two doubles. Sigg, Smith and Conner each had two singles. Kris Collins had a base hit.
