SABETHA — Jerrik Sigg turned in a dominant pitching performance in Iola American Legion Post 15’s AA Indians state tournament opener Wednesday night.
Sigg limited the host team Sabetha Post 128 to five hits and walked one batter. He racked up 12 strikeouts in Iola’s 5-0 victory at Somerset Park in the first day of play in the 2012 Kansas American Legion AA State Baseball Tournament.
Next up for the AA Indians is defending state champion Pratt, which beat Baldwin 4-1 Wednesday. Iola (38-3) plays Pratt around 8 o’clock tonight.
In other games Wednesday, Hays-TMP edged Beloit 8-7 and Silver Lake rolled over Ellis 13-3. Losers bracket games began at 10 this morning in Sabetha in the double elimination tournament.

The Indians manufactured a run in the first inning, which held up until they pushed across three runs in the fifth and got one more run in the sixth. Sigg had a big night at the plate.
Levi Ashmore led off the first inning by reaching safely when he was hit by a pitch and Clint Heffern got on via an error. Sigg’s fielder’s choice drove in the Iola run.
In the fifth inning, Ashmore singled and Heffern drew a walk and they both moved up a base on a passed ball. Sigg ripped a two-run double to left field. Drew Walden had a base hit then Corey Taylor delivered a sacrifice bunt for an RBI.
Leading 4-0, Iola got a leadoff walk from Mason Coons to open the sixth inning. Braden Larson singled and Heffern drew a two-out walk. Sabetha made a pitching change but it didn’t matter. Sigg beat out an infield single for another RBI.
