COFFEYVILLE — Not the way Iola High’s Fillies wanted to open Southeast Kansas League play, losing 55-31 to Coffeyville’s Field Kindley High’s Golden Tornado girls Friday.
Playing without starting center Kayla Callahan, the Fillies led 7-5 at the end of the first quarter. Then it was all ’Nado.
Coffeyville took full advantage of a less than aggressive Fillies’ team Friday. The Golden Tornado girls had 12 steals as the Fillies were plagued by turnovers throughout the game.
“We can make this positive and or negative. The positive is that we have players doing things that they’ve not done or being asked to do on the court. It will make them more complete players,” said Becky Carlson, Fillies’ head coach.
“With Kayla, who is ill, and Maggie out, we have players playing different roles out there and we have to keep our heads up and get better.”
In the second quarter, Coffeyville rattled off 12 unanswered points that sent Iola reeling. Carly Mulsow stopped the ’Nado run with a basket at the 4:20 mark.
Coffeyville posted a 24-12 halftime advantage. Iola had no answer for the taller and quicker Golden Tornado or the Coffeyville zone defense.
“We were not very crisp with our passes and we stood around against their zone. We’re frustrated and didn’t get shots to go down in the second half,” Carlson said.
Coffeyville outscored Iola 14-7 in the third quarter. Leading 28-19 going into the fourth period, Coffeyville went on a 17-3 run triggering a running clock at the 3:10 mark.
Iola did not shoot a free throw until Kendra Taiclet went 1 of 2 at the line with 6:06 remaining in the game. Iola shot just 27 percent, 12 of 44, from the field and 3 of 6 at the line.
Taiclet led the Fillies with 12 points. Kelsey Larson, Kelsey Adams, Mulsow and Kirstin McGuffin each had four rebounds. Lauren Toney came off the bench to make three steals.
The loss dropped the Fillies to 0-1 in SEK play and 6-7 overall.
Coffeyville was blazing from the field, 54.5 percent, 24 of 44. The Golden Tornado was 4 of 6 from the free-throw line.
Coffeyville improved to 1-0 in SEK play and 5-8 overall. A year ago, the Golden Tornado girls went 0-8 in league and 0-20 overall.
“They are very quick and taller than we are. They’ve won five games in a row,” Carlson said.
Abbie Kritz fired in 16 points while Devin Cosper, a freshman guard, came off the bench to score 15 points for Coffeyville. Darci Davis had 10 points.
Coffeyville won the junior varsity game 38-20 led by Lisa McFadden and Adams with four points each.
The Fillies play at home Tuesday for the first time since Jan. 4. They host Chanute High’s Blue Comets.
Senior Maggie Wilson, who has been out with a foot injury, will be evaluated Monday to see the extend of the injury, Carlson said.
