7th-grade squad nabs road victory

PARSONS — Iola Middle School’s seventh-grade A team kept its record spotless Thursday with a win over host Parsons. The eighth-grade A team, meanwhile, struggled against Parsons’ strength in a 46-26 defeat to drop to 3-3.
The seventh-graders took control with a 17-5 second-quarter run to lead 25-10 at intermission.
Matthew Komma led the way with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Ethan Holloway followed with 14 points and 12 boards. Isaac Vink had six points, while Evan Sigg scored three points and pulled nine rebounds. Cale Barnhart had a point.
“A very good team effort tonight,” Pony coach Marty Taylor said. “Matt just keeps getting better every game. He, Evan and Ethan controlled the game by controlling the boards. Cale gave us a boost with his energy on defense.”
Parsons led 12-5 after one quarter and 23-13 at the break of the eighth-grade A game. The Vikings sealed the win with an 18-8 third-quarter run to lead 41-20.
Braden Plumlee had 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Ben Cooper had eight points and Chase Regehr had six points and five rebounds. Colton Toney scored two points.
“We just weren’t tough enough tonight,” Taylor said. “Parsons is a big, physical team, and they pushed us around.”
Iola’s eighth-grade B team won 28-19. Mason Ingle scored 16 points for the Ponies, followed by Rhett Allen with six and Gage Cleaver, Zane Beasley and Darius Greenawalt with two apiece.
The Pony seventh-grade B team fell 11-8. Nick Vaughn scored for points for Iola. Bryce Andres and Dalton Ryherd scored two apiece.
Iola’s seventh-graders play today in the IMS Pony Stampede, starting at 9 a.m. The A team plays in the IMS gymnasium against Independence. The B team tips off against Royster Middle School, Chanute, in the Iola High gymnasium.
