To and from work each day I pass a hand-painted yard sign that reads “Everybody Sucks, 2016, The U.S. is doomed.”
The sign has been there for the last several months, I assume in reference to this year’s presidential race.
My 5-year-old granddaughter Olive is beginning to read. Everywhere we go she pieces together words and then promptly asks what they mean if she doesn’t know.
Fortunately, she lives in Topeka and doesn’t come across the “Everybody Sucks” sign.
I’d hate to hear her sound it out and then see her crestfallen face as its meaning sank in. Even at her tender age she understands hate.
BECAUSE THE tenor in this year’s election is so caustic I feel sheepish in my excitement that Hillary Clinton may be our next president.
Yes, I’m thrilled at the prospect of a woman as president of the United States — finally — but even more so because I think she will be awesome. She’s steely strong, super smart, has a good moral compass and will give it her all.
How do I know?
Because that’s what’s she’s been doing her entire life.
When she was only 15, Hillary Rodman and her Methodist church youth group heard civil rights leader Martin Luther King speak.
Clearly inspired, Hillary has worked ever since for the underprivileged, first while still a law student at Yale for the Children’s Defense Fund where she worked to see disabled children had access to quality education. While a law professor, she founded a legal aid clinic to help low-income families secure adequate representation.
Hillary was instrumental in getting Congress to pass the Children’s Health Insurance Program that ensures needy children receive healthcare. After 9/11 she worked to ensure the families of first responders received their benefits in a timelier manner. And she’s battled Big Pharma for lower drug prices for those enrolled in Medicare in her tireless efforts to reform healthcare.
So when her opponent Donald Trump accuses her of “getting nothing done,” you have to understand what he considers success — big, shiny buildings, lots of money and “arm candy.”
Why so many people think he will work for their best interests is beyond me.
