This is the first of a series of Questions and Answers addressing the Nov. 2 vote on a new hospital for Allen County. Questions are answered by various members of the Allen County Healthcare Committee, a group of citizens who are working to get the issue passed, requiring a quarter-cent increase to the county sales tax.
Q: Why so much fuss about the issue now?
A: The election is less than eight weeks away and lots of organization is required to inform voters of the need for a new hospital. Although we have more than 80 people signed up to help, we need several hundred more. We have six work teams addressing various issues of the campaign, including voter registration, publicity, speaking to groups, etc. Please let us know if you would like to help.
If your club needs a program, we have a speaker’s bureau comprised of in-formed volunteers to pre-sent programs on the new hospital. We’ll soon have a brochure that outlines the needs of the current hospital and how a new hospital not only best addresses those problems but will help carry our county into the future. We will need lots of volunteers to distribute the brochures.
Responses to all questions we receive will be posted on a website that is currently under development.
Volunteers will visit all of the municipal meetings in the county to find out how best to reach the citizens in each of our communities and to alert leaders about upcoming hospital tours for the public.
A tour of the hospital is at 9 a.m. Saturday. Meet in the front lobby.
To get the word out over the next several weeks will take money, too. Contributions can be made to “Yes Allen County Healthcare” and sent to A.C.B, Inc., 16 W. Jackson, Iola, KS 66749 or left at Emprise Bank in either Moran, Humboldt or Iola, where we have our checking account.
