Wagle distances self from Brownback

Is this a fissure of note in the ultra-conservative wing of the Kansas Republican Party?

Senate President Susan Wagle on Tuesday was critical of Gov. Sam Brownback for forfeiting a strong leadership role to find solutions to the state’s fiscal problems. The feisty Wichitan made a point prior to a committee hearing on sin taxes to rake the governor for not providing more compelling proposals.

We all remember when during his budget presentation Brownback talked about raiding tobacco proceeds (to the detriment of children’s programs), borrowing internally from funds normally above such intrusion, and asking legislators to ramp up taxes on tobacco and alcohol products. He also mentioned increasing business filing fees, which would be a fiscal pimple on a gnat’s backside.

Perhaps Wagle is coming around, though she led the minority effort that succeeded in sustaining Brownback’s veto of a House bill that would have restored most of the fiscally destructive income tax cuts of 2012-13.

As for a response to Wagle, there was none from Brownback.

Now, if we can get a couple of more senators — Caryn Tyson, whom we are convinced is a caring person — to come around, we can move Kansas forward.

A multitude of students and people in need of a strong helping hand await.
