Two weeks in Rio: Just what the doctor ordered

Just in time, the 2016 Olympics have come to the rescue to those worn out following U.S. politics or the yo-yo performance of the KC Royals. (They spoiled us.)

Talk about spirit; the U.S. Olympians have it in spades.

Treat yourself and Google the USA swim team’s spoof on Carpool Karaoke where the athletes lip-synch popular tunes, many with patriotic overtones.

It does the heart good to see these young athletes “take five” from their grueling regimens. The video clip also shows the inherent camaraderie that comes from years of training together.

Most of us can’t imagine the dedication and effort it takes to qualify as an Olympian. We got a taste of it last month reading about former Iolan Josh Honeycutt and his attempt to qualify in the triple jump.

A standout in every other competitive realm, Honeycutt’s years of work were unfortunately snuffed at the Olympic Trials in July.

We live in a world where most of us don’t have to depend on our bodies for much other than to get us to and fro, up and out — which is to our disadvantage. We all know the body responds positively to resistance.

Olympians take that to the max, whether it be perched on a balance beam, diving from a 10-meter platform, or going for a goal.

For the next two weeks us armchair athletes can enjoy the fruits of their labors.

After two political conventions, we’ve earned it.
