This evening Iola council members will consider placing restraints on use of cell phones and other electronic gadgets for people driving vehicles, which makes exceedingly good sense, and should be enacted.
Cell phones are of marvelous advantage. They give the user immediate access to a multitude of resources — including chats with friends — most anywhere and most anytime. They are particularly useful whenever help is needed, medical or otherwise, and for social or businesses calls. Truth be, they are next to indispensable for most folks.
That being said, putting limits on when to engage in conversation should be a foregone conclusion.
Driving a vehicle is a full-time job. Any distraction, even at in-town speeds, can lead to an accident and injury. At highway speeds careful attention given to driving is even more critical.
Any number of people, when so prompted by personal experiences, can give numerous accounts of when they’ve come close to a mishap because another driver was focused more on conversation than on the task at hand, driving.
Hardly any conversation can’t be put off to a more sensible time, or if indeed an emergency the call can be completed by pulling to the side of the road.
Iola council members should view favorably making the city’s streets safer.
