Register reporter bids goodbye

It’s a good sign when the list of people to say goodbye to is too long.
In the past couple days I’ve done my best. Wandering around the downtown area, having similar conversations with dozens of people has been a little tough.
I’m moving to Dallas today, to start a new job as a design editor with a hunting and fishing magazine. Sure, I’m excited to start the next phase of my life, but it’ll be a trip. Going from 6,000 people to around a million will take a bit of adjustment. If you had asked me a year ago how I’d feel about it, I would have honestly said “ecstatic.”
But, now after over a year and a half, I can honestly say “bittersweet.” It has become apparent during my last few days on the job.
My dad told me the other day that it doesn’t matter where you are, it’s always about the people, and I’ve come to realize that.
Walking around Iola, I’ve had to say my goodbyes to some people that have truly made a huge difference in my life. Last moments at city hall, the district courts office, Thrive Allen County, Around the Corner and numerous others have made me a bit sad to leave.
The friends I’ve made and the people I’ve worked with have made it a delight to live in Iola.
I know what most of you are thinking: “Well there goes another reporter.” Truth is, I’m moving for the people. It’s important to be near my parents, my brother, my sister. But, so many people in Iola have made this place my home, and I truly believe that.
Moving back to Texas may seem like moving back at first glance, but after the time I’ve had here, it feels more like moving away. That speaks a lot to the character of this place, and I’ll never forget all of the people who have made my time here so … happy.
