Necessity of growing another layer of skin (Column)

As much as I can’t wait to get Tuesday’s Election Day behind us, I’m a tad anxious of the aftermath.

What will fill the vacuum? And even more important, how will we come together as a nation.

It was March 23, 2015, that Ted Cruz announced his campaign for the Republican nomination as president. Soon others came on board, setting off the long slog of winnowing down a slate of 17.

Hillary Clinton announced her intentions in April 2015  and other than the brief but spectacular challenge by Bernie Sanders she’s been the face of the Democratic Party.

Over as much time:

• A young couple could fall in love, get married, and now have a toddler;

• After a six-month campaign Justin Trudeau became prime minister of Canada and already has completed one full year in office, and

• We’ve witnessed two miracles: The Royals and now the Cubs have become World Series champions.

So yes, this election cycle has been interminable.

Of all the speeches, debates and rallies, the most memorable for me was at the Democratic National Convention when First Lady Michelle Obama said, “When they go low, we go high.”

I fell short of that goal.

I have let the venom of the campaign cloud my better judgment. I know, because this week I received a letter critical of a recent column I wrote. It was signed, “hatefully yours.”

Now if I were totally blameless, the comment would not have stung as it did.

I’m better than that. We all are.
