For a brief time Monday afternoon cool breezes blew, the cicadas piped down and the skies slightly darkened for a solar eclipse. It was like wearing sunglasses, only without the glasses.
And for those equipped with special specs, you could see the moon traverse the sun in almost totality, the sun’s corona peeping through the portions of the giant orb.
For those who felt gypped by not being in the path of totality you can take solace in that southeast Kansas at least had clear and sunny skies.
As awe-inspiring as it was, we were hoping it would spur some miracle, such as peace on earth, if only for that 160 seconds.
Oh well. For many the eclipse was a good excuse to take a day trip to a better vantage point, which in turn boosted sales, gave a break from the routine and let us ponder about things beyond our ken.
We should have these things more often.
