Last year I was given my first taste of the Mad Bomber Run and it was a sweet one.
At first I had a hard time understanding why a small Kansas town celebrated a man who blew up the local saloons with dynamite. It sounded kind of like a celebration for a terrorist. I was a little hesitant to attend and see what this event had in store for me. As usual I was wrong and I can say I had an absolute blast. No pun intended.
I have been looking forward to this annual event all year long. I’m a fan of the Mad Bomber Run because it brings out an assortment of people. It supports togetherness in the community, which is hard to find sometimes. Sororities, churches, clubs, businesses and local musicians participate in the event in some way. They build floats for the parade of lights, set up booths and participate in the drag and main race.
This event is so weird (the good type of weird) and it wouldn’t be successful every year without the community support. Even if you’re not running the big race at 12:26 a.m. come out and see what’s happening. There is fun for the whole family and that’s another plus. You’re attendance can make a difference for this unique event.
Time and time again I have heard people say that rural communities are boring or a drag. Well how many rural Kansas communities have a drag race? That’s what I thought. Drag races don’t sound boring to me.
Let’s not forget that hundreds of out-of-towners flock to our little city to enjoy the fun. The fact that our community and area communities support the race is so amazing. The Mad Bomber Run helps put Iola on the map. It brings in visitors that see our shops, lodging and friendly faces.
So today is your chance to enjoy what Iola has to offer.
