Dear editor,

This is a “first” for me, writing to the Forum. I was captured by an article by Jennifer Tidd on the SAFE BASE trip to the Badlands.

My great-granddaughter traveled with them. Her first long bus ride. She was so scared that she would not be able to sleep or have any fun. She came home so excited and full of good stories. It was a very positive experience for sure.

Thank you to all the helpers that made this possible!

Richard, my husband of 54 years, passed away three years ago this week. Our first trip to the Bandlands on a tour bus was also to be our last vacation together.

Jennifer’s spontaneous description brought back such wonderful memories. I felt for a few moments that I was there again — such happy feelings.

So I will offer my precious 10-year-old grandchild Jennifer’s article as a keepsake in her scrapbook. I will keep my trip there as a keepsake in my heart.

Lois Drury,

Iola, Kan.

Dear editor,

I would like to thank Angela Henry and all her helpers for SAFE BASE.

It gives kids a place to go and learn instead of sitting at home alone or wandering the streets.

Both parents must work to make ends meet. The trips they take are some of the best education they can get. Camping and learning to work together is also good for them.

I understand they did not smell like roses when they got home but look on the bright side – they built up a great immunity to germs. The germs couldn’t stand the smell.
