A response to Don Erbert’s recent letter. Thank You! Your comments hit the current business issues square on the head. Finally, someone else recognizes the fact that Iola’s current economic growth model isn’t working.
Many of the past and present business leaders of both Iola and Allen County may publicly state they want growth.
Their actions, however, suggest they do not want new growth or a bigger population to support that growth.
Simple changes that would help draw potential businesses to Iola could be achieved with little expense or effort. Their lack of being addressed shows that Iola’s growth concept is incorrect. Instead, Iola and Allen County ignores them to spend money foolishly on business prospects that were not properly researched or thought out.
Iola’s economy is a microcosm of itself; not the real world. What may have worked for Iola in the past no longer applies. Iola cannot obtain new growth and economic prosperity by using the same business model concepts that worked 40 years ago. The world has changed; the economic concepts have changed. Iola needs to reevaluate the way business works in the real world versus how it works in Iola. Then, either fix the problems or accept reality and be left behind.

The City of Humboldt will be celebrating its 160th birthday on Saturday, May 20, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
We are in the process of planning the activities and are looking forward to having a great time. At present we are planning on having free Mahaffie stagecoach rides, a vintage baseball game and hotdogs, etc. Other activities are being considered, too.
If you have a calendar of events, we would like to be included in this schedule and would appreciate your letting us know how and when to take advantage of it.
Would you please contact me — either email, phone, or letter — and let me know how to be included in your calendar.
Thank you very much.
