Dear editor,

Mayor or figurehead? That is the question. The proposal coming from our new city council is for a weakened mayor’s position. In effect the person getting the most votes, having run for the office at large, will have the least amount of power.

That leaves our city government in the hands of the eight council members. I think we need stronger and more directed leadership than that. Successful organizations have strong leadership. At the helm of a large ship, do you see eight people or one? I favor a strong mayor’s position.

Ed Miller,

Iola, Kan.

Dear editor

In 2008, then candidate Obama, when asked about the rights of the unborn replied, “That is above my pay grade.” In the last few days candidate Santorum put his candidacy on suspension. Some are overjoyed at this and have even made it an irreverent sport of humor.

Anyone who cares about the value of life couldn’t help but see the love Sen. Santorum had for his daughter Bella and the joy reflected on her little face to be secure in her father’s arms.

This is why Sen. Santorum deserved to be president. Maybe why God gave her to the senator and his wife. Senator Santorum wasn’t running for a pay grade but for the protection of the weak and vulnerable.

A precious little child like Bella wouldn’t be here today if her daddy only cared about “pay grade.”

The world is a good place because of men like Rick Santorum and that is why I have absolutely no shame in unequivocally saying, “I voted for him.”

Sincerely,

Bill LaPorte

Moran, Kan.
