Letters to the Editor – 11/3/16

opinions

November 3, 2016 - 12:00 AM

Dear editor,
I am a lifelong citizen of Iola and Allen County where my late beloved wife Peggy and I have raised our five children and now have four grandchildren and two on the way.
My thoughts and prayers are always on the safety and well-being of my children and grandchildren as well as the safety and protection of all our youth.
I know Mike Aronson is and will be a strong advocate and protector of our youth and citizens of Allen County.
Mike and Mindy have three children, two of which are currently in the Iola school system.
You can be assured Mike Aronson will do everything in his power to protect the schools and students of this county and I mean all students.
It is my opinion that if you don’t protect the youth of our community you cannot take care of the other aspects of being Allen County Sheriff. Like in a family, kids should always come first.
I put my trust in and vote for Mike Aronson.
Lifelong citizen of Iola and Allen County,
Mitch Sigg

Dear editor,
Reading the opinion by the editor on why she is voting for Hillary Clinton, I can understand why Bill LaPorte feels the Register’s editorials are “hopeless.” There is a constant drumbeat for all things liberal and left of center. Anyone or anything conservative is never mentioned except in a strongly negative way. Perhaps the worst example was to endorse the person who called half of the supporters of Mr. Trump “deplorable” and “irredeemable.” That would include a large number of the people in Iola and Allen County.
Whether you are a Democrat, Republican, or neither, many believe this election is about life or death, religious freedom or tyranny. In our country over 1 million unborn children are killed in the womb every year. This is a huge human rights catastrophe. Hillary, unlike Trump, has promised to appoint only pro-abortion judges to the Supreme Court and to some how get rid of the Hyde Amendment that prohibits taxpayer funding of abortions, forcing all of us to pay for abortions. Donald Trump has already made a list of judges he will pick from who will uphold the U.S. Constitution as it is written in the manner of Justice Scalia.
There are also growing attacks on religious freedom. More and more government agencies are trying to force many Christians, institutions, and businesses to go against their deeply held beliefs. The most outlandish was the federal healthcare bureaucracy trying to force the Little Sisters of the Poor to buy health insurance that contained coverage for contraceptives including those that induce abortions.
Government agencies and officials have been forcing businesses to provide services for nontraditional marriage ceremonies. If they do not, they have been fined and in some cases lost their business by other executive actions. Yet another example was the case of Houston, Texas, pastors who had their sermons subpoenaed by the mayor of that city because they refused to support her transgender bathroom policy. These issues and many more like them are happening under the current administration. The thought of many of these things continuing and increasing in a Clinton administration is something all people that love justice and religious freedom should consider when they cast their vote on Tuesday. Trump supports religious freedom and life for the unborn.
Thank you,
Marcia Roos,
Iola, Kan.
