Keep focus on future, not the past (At Week’s End)

A friend mentioned he wanted to write a letter to the Register, to take issue with a decision made by Iola’s council.

It is his right, I allowed, but recommended he rethink the proposal.

Long ago Emerson Lynn Jr., who held sway over Register editorial pages for half a century, was of the opinion that commentary should occur before a decision is made. Don’t fuss with what (local) governing bodies do afterward, he said, move on to whatever comes next. State and federal issues are a different matter; politicians seldom let go, so why should we.

That certainly doesn’t preclude revisiting a topic, with a forward approach. What comes to mind is improvements to local schools. Several bond issues occurred before the high school was remodeled. One for new schools was defeated. Evidence has been presented lately confirming that expensive upgrades are down the pike for all buildings including their heating and cooling systems. In the not too far future we must again consider new schools. Nothing lasts forever.

Though there have been ample examples of dissatisfaction with the election of Donald Trump — it’s a done deal, and should be accepted — I hope most of the participants in last Saturday’s marches were involved because they want to effect change and ensure the rights for women, minorities, and others who Trump was less than receptive to during his campaign.

On the night of the election Trump said he wanted to be a president for all Americans. Let’s hope he follows that course, particularly with health care.

We can’t ignore the 20-plus million folks who are insured by provisions of the Affordable Care Act.

More to the point, we should find ways to ensure all Americans have the guarantee of not being made instant paupers if beset by sudden injury or illness.

If he and the wedge of ultra-conservatives in Congress don’t make healthcare a top priority, they should be taken to task.
