Kansas congressional delegation supports Trump; holds noses

Rep. Lynn Jenkins, Kansas congresswoman, continues to pledge her support for fellow Republican Donald Trump  while at the same time calls him despic-able.

In a CBS News poll released Tuesday, Jenkins is quoted as saying, “Donald Trump’s comments are disgusting, outrageous and wrong on so many levels. There is no place for anyone, anywhere to condone assault or promote undesired sexual advances. It doesn’t matter the place, it doesn’t matter the time — his words were offensive and backwards.”

While Jenkins may say “there is no place” for people like Trump, if people like her elect him as our 45th president, that very place will be 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Jenkins is saying that while Trump may be a lout, because he’s a Republican, he’s the best choice for the country.

Jenkins, R-Holton, is seeking a fifth term representing the 2nd District.

U.S. Senators Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran also continue their support of Trump, though the recent reports of Trump boasting about sexually molesting women have tempered it.

Roberts called Trump’s behavior “abhorrent,” while Moran called it “disgusting, discouraging and damaging. Everyone is worthy of being treated with dignity and respect.”

Moran is seeking a second Senate term, and, it must be assumed, like Jenkins, is putting party fealty ahead of decency.

ELSEWHERE, those who had previously aligned themselves with Trump are dropping like flies.

As of Tuesday afternoon, one-third of the Senate Republican caucus had defected.

On Monday, House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, said he could no longer support the party’s standard-bearer.

Conservatives roundly criticized Ryan, saying his betrayal could be the straw that breaks the party’s back. That’s not all bad. For too long Republicans have been  loathe to admit they are not attuned to today’s citizenry and that they need to recalibrate.

Out of the ashes could come revival for the GOP.
