There seems to be a lot of discussion pertaining to some tickets written to Sonny Maley on his riding lawn mower and another to a person on a bicycle for not having a license tag light.
I’m all for enforcing the law, but is our city coffers so broke that they have to resort to ticketing people on bicycles and mowers. Come on, a warning ticket could, and should, have been issued, and the persons given a chance to rectify the infractions.
Then, if it wasn’t taken care of in the specified amount of time, then let the ticket stand. A lot of people I see stopped can’t feed their children, pay rent or utilities. So do the children go hungry and cold by having hundreds of dollars in fines to pay?
I was in law enforcement for years. I wanted to be respected by our citizens as I respected the people. I don’t think our police have officers on a ticket quota. At least I hope not.
If the people believe as I do, write or call the mayor and state your concerns.
While in a restaurant in Chanute people were talking about our court news and all the petty tickets they read about in the court news. They also said they were afraid to even come through Iola let alone to shop for fear of getting a ticket, and why would the city not see what is going on. I again believe in en-forcement, but this is preposterous.
Keep smiling
Respectfully,
