Every time of year is a great time of year to volunteer. Volunteering is a way to change your world on a daily or weekly basis. For some, volunteering is as natural as breathing. They enjoy the whole process of being involved. They want to take on new challenges or to learn new skills. They delight in sharing their knowledge and ideas with others and love the process of watching those ideas come to fruition.

For others, the thought of volunteering, making a commitment to a project, even a project that only lasts a week, seems like an impossibility. This may be due a shortage of confidence, an abundance of anxiety, a misunderstanding of the time required, or not understanding how important volunteers are.

There are so many opportunities in Allen County to put your best foot forward and volunteer. Time, talent, and/or treasure are all needed for so many things.

Humanity House is always looking for volunteers who are willing to donate an hour of their time a week to teach a skill. We’re looking for volunteers to light up the Iola and Humboldt squares. We’re looking for those who want to volunteer by donating their treasures — toys that are no longer used and coats and hats that no longer fit. We look for those who have children’s books that have been read many times over and are ready to provide entertainment to a new child. We look for those who are bakers who want to bring their cookie baking skills to Santa’s Toy Shop. For those who can’t physically volunteer: candy canes, donations for food boxes for families, adopting a tree or display on either square — all of those are ways to volunteer to a project with treasure. Just stopping by to cheer on the workers is a fantastic moral booster.

Farm City Days, Veterans Day Parade, Iola Community Theatre, Boy and Girl Scouts, PTO, Humanity House Community Garden, Forensics, Water Wars, Bike Around Humboldt Square, the Southwind Trail, Biblesta, and running for city, school board, or county offices all are amazing ways to give back to your community and make truly great things happen.

Without volunteers, there is no way that any of the above listed organizations can operate.

If you have an idea that you think would add to any of these organizations, time that you could give, or any talent or treasure that could be shared, all or any of these things would be welcomed.

Take a walk on the wild side and volunteer. Your life will be richer because of it.

Kindness matters!
