Humanity House

We are scrambling like mad to finish everything up at the new Humanity House building. The gardening had been postponed due to the weird attitude of Mother Nature, but with the sunshine and a couple of days under our belt in the garden, things are coming along in that respect also.

Because we can never have too much going on, classes are underway at the new building. This past week we began our beginner’s guitar classes. Our teacher is an excellent guitarist and the students are enthusiastic and range in age from 6 to 40. It’s wonderful to listen to someone make their first perfect chord and see the spark of possibility in their eyes.

On May 10, we will resume our American Sign Language classes. This year, Chelsea Shrum will teach children on Thursdays 6:30-7:15 and adults 7:30-8:30. Chelsea is also an enthusiastic teacher. This class is a great one. Learning to communicate with everyone is important. Children are especially good at picking up sign language quickly. If you have children who are not all booked up in other activities this is a great class for them. Parents can either come with the kids or drop them off and then hit the Allen County Farmer’s Market with all of their terrific produce and homemade goods.

Though it is not a Humanity House activity, we hosted the first meeting of Iola’s newest book club yesterday. If you want to join up, it’s a great group of fun people who love to read, love books and love to talk.

Georgia Masterson is giving a Bridges Out of Poverty class 9 a.m.-noon May 12. Mark this on your calendar as this class is an eye opener and a great way to begin to understand your friends, neighbors and family who struggle with poverty.

To open the gardening season, the Humanity House Community Garden will be hosting a Stone Soup afternoon of fun and food and games at the garden. It’s a happy way to kick off the gardening season with friends. You don’t have to be a gardener or have a plot at the garden to participate. All you have to do is have a happy attitude and enjoy the outdoors. As the date for this event approaches, we will post an update.

Pam Tressler and her pals at Class Act are making plans to bring it on over to Humanity House for our Dad’s Do the Do class. They will be teaching dads (and probably a few moms) the art of the perfect ponytail, pigtail, braids and other hairstyles that kids love to sport.

Thanks to generous donations from a few people in our community, the washers and dryers are waiting to be installed so our Laundry Love program can begin: we have new tables and chairs coming and new office equipment, surround sound that is ready to be set up, new freezers in our pantry and because of a generous donor, our food pantry is helped every week from our local G&W grocery.

We feel so much gratitude for everything that we receive from the smallest investment to the largest. We feel that our work touches the lives of every person living in Allen County. Whether you are the recipient of one of our services or just have a friendly conversation with someone who is, everyone’s life is better when kindness is at the forefront of every thought, deed and word we speak. Thank you all so much.

Kindness matters!
