Letter to the Editor – January 24, 2020

Dear editor,

When Title IX hit our school system in 1974, I happened to be the girls P.E. teacher at Iola High School and Don Bain was our principal.

Mr. Bain skillfully informed me the district would have a girls basketball team and I would be its first coach.

In that era, the girls teams were differentiated from the boys by inserting the word “Lady” before the mascot name. While searching for a name more creative and unique than Lady Mustangs, I came across the definition of a filly. Perfect. The Iola Fillies were born.

I choose not to discuss the recent decision that sends this old mare and her beloved fillies to a rendering works. My politically correct response is “whatever.”

GO MUSTANGS!

Nancy Yokum,

A Filly forever,

Iola, Kan.
