Letter to the editor — January 24, 2017

To the editor,

The results of the presidential election that proceeds an inauguration can affect everyone, no matter what an individual’s political vent may be: Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, independent or other. Some people may like the results while others may not. We are all human, and each of us form our own opinions from our life experiences. We all live together and hopefully can get along with each other. But the election process is still news that should be reported.

On January 20, 2017 the United States of America inaugurated the country’s 45th president. It was the result of an often contentious election process that is held every four years. Both events are important to the country’s continuing democratic process. It is also news.

Will I disagree with the practice, I can understand a newspaper leaning in one political direction. However, if the news can or does affect everyone, the news should be reported no matter what direction the newspaper leans. Print your opinions as editorials. To not cover and print important news that can affect everyone in the nation, not to mention those living in Allen County, is wrong.

The Iola Register published frequent commentary of the election events leading to the inauguration. Regardless of any inferred political direction by the newspaper in covering the election process and results, at least it was reported as news.

However, as of this writing, it appears that the inauguration  of our 45th President was a non-news event. In the past, if a news event occurred late Friday or over the weekend, coverage was provided on Monday. While late, the news made it into print.

Not the inauguration. If a visitor to Iola was to glance at a copy of the Iola Register, the inauguration never happened.  Not only is that a disservice to the people of Allen County, but it’s also a slam at the highest position in this country.

In all fairness, one small photograph was published. It had less fanfare and covered less print space than a local accident or a heavy rainstorm. Sad.

While many people obtain news from a variety of sources: radio, Facebook, cable, the Internet; many do not. They depend on their local newspaper. If a local newspaper cannot publish news important to everyone, why have a newspaper?

Respectfully,

Dave Jackson,

Iola, Kan.
