Dear editor,
I would like to apologize for speaking my mind on economic development issues when my thoughts would have been more appropriate not said at all or covered in-person or privately. My place as a city administrator is to give recommendations to the city council and let them make the decisions or make public statements through their votes.
I will soon, within three months or so, be finished with my role as city administrator, perhaps even sooner if the city council gets fed up with me, and turn the responsibilities over to someone else. I want to express my appreciation to all of the department heads for their diligent work. Every one is committed to the community and work to the best of their abilities to maintain, protect and preserve our great community. It has been a pleasure working with them.
I also want to thank those who serve as our elected officials. It is not easy trying to represent the will of the community and make decisions based on the information available that will lead to the best future for the community. There is often controversy, never enough funding to meet the needs of each community effort, and many ideas on how best to help the community grow. My goal has been to provide all of the information to the public that is provided to the city council so each of you may be informed.
I encourage the younger generation to work diligently to get a good education. Use your time wisely to study and learn as much as possible. Continue your education beyond high school in a vocational or higher education program that will help you provide a higher quality life for you and your family. We are fortunate to have the resources of Allen Community College where further education is very affordable and excellent quality.
We have a great community and a marvelous political system that relies on volunteer service. I appreciate those who are willing to serve in many ways in the community without expecting a reward or personal recognition. We have many examples of those who work tirelessly and give of their time, talents and means to help their neighbors, church or school. I commend you for your efforts.
I am not sure what my future will bring, but for now I will remain in the community and seek more opportunities to serve in a volunteer capacity, spend more time visiting our five children and 17 grandchildren or my brothers and sisters and do more family history work.
Sincerely,
Carl Slaugh,
Iola city administrator
