Letter to the editor — February 19, 2016

Dear editor,

I guess it’s because I’m old enough to remember when common sense was alive but it seems like the world has gone nuts. People are not civil to one another. It’s all about me.

Intelligence is a good thing but without common sense you have what my Dad called an intellectual idiot. Many of these people seem to go into politics and the promise of money and power causes the idiot part to become the dominant factor.

Our governor comes to mind. A good share of the people making our laws are lawyers.

They keep shouting about welfare costing so much money but the laws they have made only hurt the ones that need it. They want to keep the focus on welfare so they don’t have to face the real elephant in the room. Drugs!! This is costing lots of money and destroying many lives. We have so many laws that protect the druggies it’s hard for law enforcement to do their job. These people get right testy when those mean old cops wake them in the middle of the night for a raid. And of course they all have a right to have a gun, which could be dangerous for the officers. If drugs are found and they are arrested most of the time they are back dealing before the cops can get their paperwork done.

Rehab may work for some but most just make a game of it. If they aren’t cured by the second rehab they need to go to a boot camp. No computer, no cell phone, no video games. Roll them out of bed at 6 a.m. Exercise and feed them good meals. Teach them personal hygiene, how to cook, some job skills. Good behavior gets them some cell phone time. Three months for the first time, six months the second, and so on.

Several counties could go together and build a facility at a central location. Talk to the powers that be.

Gee, I miss common sense.

Maude Burns,

Iola, Kan.
